Tour Description:
Day 1 Denpasar – Kalibaru 230km
Leaving Kuta we head direction west passing small villages as well as a suspension bridge before turning right to go up the mountain direction north. Rice fields and clove trees line the curvy tarmac road. After a coffee break, we approach the north coast via the small town of Pupuan. Once on the northern ring road we follow the coastline westward to the ferry port of Gilimanuk interrupted by our lunch. The ferry to Java needs 1 hour which we “win back” by entering a different time zone. Bypassing the area’s capital, Banyuwangi, we follow the national road No 3 for some kilometers to Kalibaru. Time to enjoy the garden and the pool after our long ride.

Day 2 Kalibaru – Sidomulyo 175km
We continue our ride on the Nat 3 as there is no other way to pass the Gumitir Hill on the slopes of the 3000+ m high Raung. We give Jember a wide berth and follow the southern coastline expecting very little traffic. After a coconut-with-a-view break we enter the Lumajang region well-known for its waterfalls. One of it, the Tumpak Sewu Fall is our goal. From our accommodation we just have to do 3 km to the parking area of one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Indonesia. First on a steep concrete, later on iron steps and eventually inside a water stream (supported by ropes and reeling) we get down to the bottom of the valley. The flow of waterfall will be to pass and then you have the stunning view to this horse shoe fall. Feel the spray and the blow and let the feeling drive you…..If still enough time a small path along the river will lead us to the adjacent waterfall called Goa Tetes. Also, there the way up will lead us through the fall. Adventure pure! Our wet shoes will dry in the sun while we have a refreshment drink. The day will end with a proper homemade cooking at a homestay near the falls.

Day 3 Sidomulyo – Wonokitri (Bromo) 125km
After breakfast it’s time to move on. Coming closer to the city of Malang we will face bit more traffic for app 10km, then we have reached our next spot. The colourful villages of Tridi and Jodipan are definitely a visit worth. After having lunch, we make our way up to the Bromo-Tengger Massif, precisely to Wonokitri, where we stay over.

Day 4 Wonokitri – Jember 150-180km (bike-dependent)
Today’s first goal is the sunrise point Penanjakan, therefore our activities start at around 3am. All on Tarmac and semi-steep we ride up to 2800 m asl. The sunrise and the view to the active Mt. Bromo as well as to Mt. Semeru, the roof of Java, is just breathtaking. The way down is a different one and partly quite steep. Once at the bottom of the caldera we enter the “Sandbox”. As we are bikers, we are allowed to approach the temple at the bottom of Bromo on 2 wheels, biker’s advantage! A 15 min uphill hike brings us to the rim of Bromo where you can taste the hell by having a look into the “maw” of the volcano. Time to leave the “moon”, some kilometers to go downhill before we turn right to get up again to the villages of the highland farmers. A combination of concrete and totally broken roads bring us back to the “civilization” before we again dive into the “Noman’s land”. On-road and off-road sections lead us through the forest and several villages back to the main road. Just few kilometers to go to our hotel in Jember.

Day 5 130km Jember – Licin
A relatively short ride lies ahead of us. Sugar cane fields and rice paddies seam the roads we take direction Ijen. The higher the elevation the more the vegetation changes, we pass now coffee plantations. Leaving the main road, we just have 3k to go to Blawan with its Mini Niagara Falls and the volcanic hot water basins where we can have a quick jump-in. Up to the Paltuding ridge and down to the village of Licin we will have lunch and afterward visit a place called Taman Gandrung Terakota where terracotta statues of traditional dancers symbolize a Thanksgiving tradition. 1 km more to reach our Hotel for tonight.

Day 6 230km Licin – Denpasar/Bali
If the well-known Ijen hike is wanted we would have to leave the Homestay around 1am to get the 15k up to the ranger station by bike. After a quick tea we start the 3 km steep uphill hike and the climb on rocks down to the crater’s bottom (~25min) to see the famous blue fire. After enjoying the sunrise over the acidic crater lake we make our way back to our bikes and ride back to the hotel for breakfast. Now it’s a 30k ride down to the ferry port of Ketapang. Unfortunately we have “to give back” our previously won hour when we enter Bali. Via the north coast and the triple lakes near Bedugul we make our way to Denpasar where a long day and also the tour ends.
