Bali - Lombok - Sumbawa

SUMBAWA: THE UNKNOWN FRONTIER

Pure Riding. Zero Crowds. Total Adventure.

While the world flocks to the familiar, the true explorers turn East. Heavily underrated and largely ignored by the tourist trail, Sumbawa is the "Hidden Jewel" of the Sunda Islands. This isn't a tour for sightseers—it’s a mission for riders who live for the road.

Why Sumbawa?
Sumbawa is a landscape frozen in time, offering the authentic, raw soul of Indonesia. We leave the traffic of Bali and Lombok far behind to enter a territory where the roads are yours and the adventure is real.
  • Conquer the Tambora: Ride the quiet, winding tracks around the base of the mighty Mount Tambora—the volcano that once changed the world’s climate.
  • The Path Less Traveled: Navigate river crossings, discover ancient hidden stone carvings, and visit traditional boat-builders in villages where life moves at the pace of the tides.
  • Maximum Riding Flow: With minimal traffic and a mix of perfect asphalt and challenging off-road trails, this is 100% pure riding fun.
This is the unknown territory. This is a biker’s paradise. It’s Riding Time.

Day 1 Kuta/Lombok - Sekongkang/Sumbawa (175 km)   [The tour can be adjusted to start in Bali]
Leaving Kuta straight after breakfast, we follow a scenic road and pass some fisherman villages along the coast line. After ~2.5 h we will arrive at the port of Kayangan and take another ferry ride of about two hours to Sumbawa. Once there, this island shows its difference to Lombok from the first meter. Unaffected by tourism you feel immediately the silence, wow...no traffic. We head south, passing a mangrove section and having lunch in a resto with stunning view to the ocean, to overnight in a bungalow compound near the beach. Sekongkang beach invites us to enjoy a colorful sunset and to get a feeling of an "Endless Summer"….sundowner beer available.

Day 2 Sekongkang - Sumbawa Besar/Sumbawa (210 km)
We have to leave early in the morning to cover this day’s stage. Through dense forest, tropical jungle, along deserted beaches and along rivers winds our trail. We ride the south of the island towards Lunyuk, the only locality within 80 kilometers. After a refreshment break at a convenience store it goes more up and down, passing highland areas, also a short off-road passage has to be mastered. Back to the "civilization" we leave Sumbawa-Besar on our left and take the last 20km to our beachfront accommodation just opposite of Moyo Island.
Day 3 Moyo Island
Riding Day-Off. After Breakfast we will take a boat ride to the adjacent island for snorkeling and relaxing. Time for a beach walk while the fish bbq gets prepared.
Day 4 Sumbawa Besar – Labuan Jambu (115 km)
A late start leaves time for either a massage or even hanging around on the pool. After lunch the bit more than 100k quickly go away under the tires. A last stop will give us the chance to taste coffee from different areas of Indonesia. Just 9k more to go. Our accommodation tonight will be a quite new homestay which isn’t far from the jetty of our boat trip tomorrow morning.
ay 5 Labuan Jambu - Calabai   (160 km)
We are leaving 3:30am by boat (jetty 100m beside the homestay) to see the fishermen at work and meet the whale shark(s) after the fishing nets got lifted, swimming with the biggest fish on earth is possible and very exciting. We will be back on land around 9am. After having flushed the salt water from our bodies and a late breakfast we continue our trip. Keen to be back on the bikes we ride on the island-highway direction east to cover the distance of our daily stage. Our final destination today is Calabai, a small town situated on the slopes of the volcano Tambora with its special history. On our way we drive through pastures with free-ranging horses and cattle, water buffalos with huge horns enjoy their bath in waterholes. The volcano Tambora is always in sight. Once at the home stay, a beer let us forget the efforts of the day quickly. Home cooked dinner or Sate (local meat skewer) will be provided at eve.

Day 6 Calabai – Bima   (225 km)
An early start is required. On tarmac roads, via short off-road passages (who wants can do a river crossing) we get around Tambora on its North-East. Cliffs and beaches on our left, the mountain massif with the biggest caldera on earth on our right. Dependent on our decision for lunch (snack and dinner or late lunch in Bima due to lack of food stalls along the way), we will pay the Bidadari Waterfall a visit. Via Kilo we get to the north coast to explore the villages along the Flores Sea coastline. Totally rural and authentic. On one of our breaks there will be the possibility to climb an abandoned light house to enjoy the 360°-view. Last step of this stage is going to Bima, one of the largest cities of the island. We check in to a city hotel in the heart of Bima.
Day 7 Bima – Bima   (160 km)
As we stay at the same hotel, we can leave our baggage there and start our stage, the East-Island-Loop. Leaving Bima direction north-east, tiny roads lead us along the Bima Bay. Sangiang, our next destination, is the center of the local ship building business. Here we have a break to visit the boat builders and watch the brisk business of the traders on the beach, always having a look at the stunning volcano Sangeang Api on the other side of the strait. We move on to the Easternmost civilized point of Sumbawa, the ferry-port town Sape. On our way we will stop at some viewpoints to overlook the stunning scenery, continuing on small roads through the villages along the East-coast of Sumbawa. Lunch break and time to relax will be in the resto of a Dive Resort on the beach (lunch menu of the day and possibility to snorkel). After all we ride back to Bima (~60k).
Day 8 Bima – Hu`u/Lakey  (100 km)
Most kilometers have to be done on the main road thus some truck- and bus traffic should be expected. It’s just 100k thus our lunch would be taken in a warung already in Lakey. As Lakey is a famous surfer spot, shacks and warungs at the beach invite for an evening hang out.
Day 9 Hu`u/Lakey – Sumbawa Besar (225 km)
A riding day lies ahead of us. On small side roads, passing rice paddies and fishermen villages, we make our way back to Soriutu where we hit the highway again. After having passed the hilly scenic area again it isn’t far anymore to our lunch break. As we know the road from few days ago, the kilometers on the Trans-Nusa Highway quickly get away under the tires. Our accommodation today is a city hotel in Sumbawa Besar.
Day 10 Sumbawa Besar - Senaru   (170 km)
It’s a 2-hours ride to Poto Tano, where we board the ferry to Lombok. After the crossing time of another 2 hours and a few kilometers in direction north we reach our lunch break spot. Now we have just 60k left to Senaru, a village on the slopes of the Rinjani Caldera. On our way we would have the possibility to visit the oldest mosque of the Lombok natives.
Day 11 Senaru – Kuta/Lombok   (145 km)    [The tour can be adjusted to finish in Bali]
In the morning we visit the nearby Sidang Gile waterfall. Once on our bikes we follow the northern coastline direction Mataram, the capital of Lombok. High above the ocean are some viewpoints from where we have always a breathtaking view to the landscape around us…palm-fringed beaches, the “famous-infamous Gilis”… A few kilometers more to Senggigi where we will have our lunch break in a resto next to the beach. Saturated, now it is time to make our last kilometers to Kuta where our tour ends.
