Flores Expedition!!
Indonesia, from Bali on the Sunda Islands to Flores!
16 Days & 16 Nights extreme Adventure!
starts from $3649 full Package incl. Hotel, entry fees, breakfast, National park fees, Bikes, guide.....)
When hearing about Indonesia, one often thinks only about the Hindu enclave in the Muslim dominated archipelago. However, the whole breathtaking diversity of the Indonesian archipelago is displayed only to those travelers who visit also the other islands such as the fertile central island of Java or the Lesser Sunda Islands east of Bali where their flora and fauna is already almost similiar to the nearby Australia. The islands are of volcanic origin and are located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Our tour takes you across these small Sunda Islands of Nusa Tenggara. Over 3000 kilometer we will travel. Endless curves, climbs to plateaus and back down to sea level palm-fringed beautiful sandy beaches that meet all clichés of South Seas romance,
A trip to the unique Komodo Islands with their giant monitor lizards should not be missed.
The destination is the Kelimutu National Park. A volcano with three crater lakes. Each of these lakes has a different color which varies from time to time. Why? We will hopefully find it out...
Together with the beautiful sunrise we experience a unique and mystical atmosphere which we never forget.
We will see three world religions on different islands. The island archipelago presents itself as a perfect blend of culture, magnificent scenery and great adventures, as a tropical holiday destination where all wanderlust dreams come true.

Itinerary:
Briefing - Equipment - Motorcycles
Arrival on Bali a day before, we will sopport with Accomodation and Airport Transfer.
In the afternoon we will meet for the tour briefing, the motorcycles are handed over and adjusted with the necessary equipment.
Day 1: Seminyak/Bali - Kuta/Lombok
Early in the morning at 5 o'clock we leave already for Padang Bai in the east of Bali. it is the first ferry port of our tour. We have to pass the busiest part of the whole trip, the island's capital Denpasar. At this time of the day there is only little traffic.
After we have passed some temples along the east coast we reach the port. The crossing to Lombok by ferry takes about 5 hours.
On Lombok it gets immediately very rural - Although we still travel in Indonesia, we experience a completely different world than it was in Bali. Small country roads and light off-road passages lead us to our destination Kuta, a small village with beautiful beaches in the south of Lombok. (Please do not confuse with the homonymous party area on Bali)
The white sandy beach is not very busy and is perfect for swimming and having a sundowner.

Day 2: Kuta/Lombok - Sekongkang/Sumbawa
From Southern Kuta we travel to the east coast of Lombok and take a short ferry ride of about two hours to Sumbawa.
It is an island which is quite unaffected by tourism. Exceptions are some surf places. We will experience the real life of Indonesian villages. We head south to overnight at one of the surf beaches in a surf camp. We will enjoy a colorful sunset and get a feeling of an "Endless Summer". White long beaches invite us to stay and relax or to stroll.

Day 3: Sekonkang - Sumbawa Besar/Sumbawa
We have to leave early in the morning to cover this days stage. Through dense forest and along deserted beaches and rivers winds our trail. We drive in the south of the island towards Lunyuk, the only locality after 80 kilometers off and on-road. Graveled roads with partly slight sandy layers have to be mastered and also some easy river crossings.
Wonderful lonely beaches, tropical jungle peppered with volcanoes and pristine wildlife. Certainly we will experince some surprises here.
Lunyuk is a very traditional place and would invite us for a longer stay with the friendly inhabitants. Unfortunately there is no accommodation here, so we have to continue to the next larger location.

After we leave the main route to the north, we drive on good gravel roads and over pastures with free-ranging horses and cattle. Water buffalos with huge horns enjoy their bath in waterholes. The volcano Tambora is always in sight.

Day 7: Sape - Labuan Bajo
Around 8:00 o'clock in the morning the ferry leaves the port towards Labuan Bajo. The crossing takes about seven to eight hours.
Time to relax and to watch the Komodo islands with their unique giant lizard from a far distance.
After being in Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa on Flores awaits us a totally different religion and different people with their customs and cultures. The afternoon is for leisure.
We explore the small former fishermen village by our own.
In the evening we will hold a tour briefing for the next days.

Day 8: Komodo National Park - Rinca
After we took our snorkeling gear at the reception, we Walk to the port of Labuan Bajo and board the local, wooden buginese boat. We head along the coastline to the island of Rinca in the Komodo National Park. Many picturesque small islands with white sandy beaches cross our path. On Rinca the Ranger is already waiting for us. He accompanies us during the walk on the island and explain all about the life and behavior of the Komodo Dragon. Then we take a short break at the National Park headquarter before we continue our way back to Labuan Bajo. Of course we stop at some snorkeling sites. During this tour a lunch package is served on the boat.

Day 9: Labuan Bajo - Ruteng - Mbolata Beach
We leave Labuan Bajo and travel on a winding mountain road to Ruteng.
The rural Flores with its typical mountain and valley landscape invites us for a few photo stops.
In Cancar we visit the spiderweb rice fields. An unicum that only can be found in this small area in the world.
Ruteng is a small town in the mountains with moderate temperatures. If the weather allows, we travel to Golo Curu, the "Welcome Hill" of Ruteng. It is a beautiful vista point from which we have a spectacular view of Ruteng, the mountain scenery and thousands of green rice terraces.
The local cathedrale invites us for a short visit as the majority on Flores is catholic.
Tonight we stay in a small Eco Beach Resort right on Mbolata Beach. Not far from Mbolata we get to know the traditional process of "Sopi" manufacturing. Sopi is a kind of palm liqueur or brandy which is distilled from the fermented juice of specific species of palm trees. After liqueur tasting we better don't ride our bikes again. We better spend the late afternoon on or beside the beach. Time for swimming in the warm waters of the Sawu Sea or for a stroll on the beach. Afterwards we enjoy the evening by a fish BBQ.

Day 10: Mbolata - Bajawa
Our day today is full of variety. The travel distances are somewhat shorter. We are in the middle of an area with many cultural highlights.
We leave Mbolata and drive over a small path steeply into the mountains to Belaraghi, a small traditional village. There is so much to see and discover.
Back on the coast line we drive through the fisher village of Aimere and follow the winding road up to 1200 meters towards Bajawa. On the way we can catch sight of spectacular views to the volcanic scenery and the Sawu Sea with its wild beaches.
Bajawa, our final destination for today, is a small and quiet town situated in a basin, surrounded by volcanoes and mountains. In the area around Bajawa one can find the cultural heart of Flores. For thousands of years seperated from the rest of the world, traditions and culture could be preserved. One still can find numerous authentic megalithic villages with sacrificial altars, court squares, shrines and traditional houses in the mountains.
Due to the moderate climate with relatively low temperatures many varieties of vegetables, fruits and herbs grow in this area. At night it can be quite chilly.

Day 11: Bajawa
In the morning we drive towards the southern coast. On the way to the unique and certainly best preserved megalithic village Bena we see already a lot of more or less intact traditional villages. We approach the volcano Inerie. Directly in front of us, almost close enough to touch, it reaches with its steep, barren flanks high to the sky. A photo in a geological schoolbook could not show it better. Bena lies on the foot of this impressive volcano. People here still hold to their traditions and customs, although they have already been opened to tourism. We take plenty of time to experience their daily life.
If we're still in the mood to visit another megalithical village, then we should make our way to the neighboring Guronsina. Infront of the backdrop of green mountains this village seems to be more sublime and almost forgotten by the world. Where are the villagers, we will ask ourselves. Let us surprise!
On the way back we make a short stop at our hotel to fetch our swimming wear. We leave Bajawa again. This time we are heading northwards.
After 10 days of traveling wellness is announced. We go to the hot springs of Soa. Let us spend time in the natural jacuzzi or we sit in the warm, rushing creek or under the cascade and allow us the lukewarm, slightly sulphurous waters gush over our bodies. A treat which we certainly can not enjoy every day!

Day 12: Bajawa - Moni
Well relaxed, we continue our adventurous tour to the direction of Moni, our next highlight.
We tour on the panoramic road on the plateau of Bajawa. In "Little Switzerland" of South East Asia, we make our first break and visit the magnificent recreational seminar center and the baroque-like garden of the Catholic priests municipality of Flores. Head is still Father Kurt, an elderly and wise gentleman, who has really much experienced on Flores.
Shortly infront of the city Ende we stop at probably one of the unique beaches with blue-green pebbles of all sizes. One can find this type of pebbles only in this particular small area of Indonesia. Bali and Javanese people import these pebbles to beautify paths in their gardens or to produce paving stones.
Ende is a medium sized city on the south coast, which is of great importance for the Catholic administration of the island. We let the town quickly behind us and wind up on the edge of a river valley to Moni, the starting point for the expedition to the Kelimutu Three Crater Lakes

Day 13: Moni - Kelimutu
Early morning at four o'clock - or even later depending on the weather - we drive up to the parking lot of the Kelimutu volcano from where we hike approximately thirty minutes to the viewpoint of the Three Crater Lakes. We climb 127 steps and if the weather permits during this time of the year, we will see the lakes in their most beautiful colors: emerald milky green, dark green and sometimes Oker-red and light black. The sunrise is a truly lasting impression.
After breakfast we set out on a small tour through endless curves back down to the sea to the supposedly most beautiful beach of Flores. We pay Coca Beach a visit.
There will be time for swimming and lunch.
In the late afternoon we return to Moni. Anyone who wants, can still take a bath in the small basin of the waterfall on the foot of Kelimutu National Park.

Day 14: Moni - Maurole - Riung
After almost two weeks heading eastwards we have reached the turning point of our journey, but we haven't still seen everything Flores has to offer. Just for a few kilometers we drive the island's main road towards Ende. Always downhill accompanied by forest and deep gorges, Then we turn northward and later westwards to reach the 17 Islands National Park. Our bikes get a little bit more stressed on this and the next day's way.
We drive through the driest part of the island of Flores. A wide, slightly hilly grassland with occasional settlements. If we did not know that we would be in Indonesia, then we could believe, we are traveling across the hillcountry of Wyoming or South Dakota in the United States.
Unfortunately, the road condition will change here often.

Day 15: Riung 17 islands Boat trip
Today we have a non riding but relaxing day on a small hidden paradise island.
The islands in front of Riung are uninhabited with white sandy beaches. Time for swimming and possibly for snorkeling and exploring the underwater world. On one of these wonderful Robinson Crusoe Islands we go ashore, stroll along the beach and explore the island. Our crew will prepare a tasty fish BBQ for our lunch.
The afternoon we will spend in the hammock in the shadow of the palm trees.
In the late afternoon we are back in Riung. We drive back only 5 min to our accommodation on a majestic avenue of coconut trees.

Day 16: Riung - Ruteng (North Coast) - Labuan Bajo
Initially we go on a dirt road always along the coast to the west. We have views to the sea and to the small islands of the National Park. The landscape becomes more mountainous and the vegetation denser and greener. We pass some small villages which are predominantly Muslim.
During our breaks we will be warmly welcomed by local people. Indonesia is a very open-minded and hospitable country.
From Ruteng to Labuan Bajo we have to take the already well-known route because there is a lack of alternative ways. To the west, this way is not at all boring. Bends and turns await us in the mountains down to Labuan Bajo. From far away we can already see the worthhile panorama of the offshore islands. On the way we will visit a colonial church.
After our arrival in Labuan Bajo the tour will end in our booked accommodation.
Afterwards you can spend a few days on the beach in Labuan Bajo or Bali to let pass revue the experienced.
If you are a diver, you can do some dives.
We will assist with booking of domestic flight to Bali (approx. US$100) or connecting hotels. Please contact us.

Bali to Flores Adventure
I did the Bali to Flores trip with two mates in September/October 2022. An amazing trip as described in the website.
Everything from Motor Adventure Bali was delivered really well right from the outset of contact with Chris, he ensures our questions were answered promptly and really assisted in every way possible in the pre-arrival process, this extended to the, bikes, support vehicle, transfers at both ends were well provided or assisted and our guide Holga was informative, helpful and most tolerant of our Australian humor, or lack of it!
All the accommodation was great, albeit the occasional hiccup NOT due to poor planning just the vagaries of being in a remote place with language challenges, all part of the fun.
The bikes were well maintained, good tires etc, the roads were excellent with occasional challenges, the food was excellent and the pace was consistent as was the scenery and its changing nature as you travel across the islands.
All the people we met were lovely and welcoming.
I would highly recommend Motor Adventure Bali for trips in Indonesia.
